Urbania, Nature and Cherry Garcia

Ice cream and cycling really do go together. Really. They do.

This Memorial Day weekend, I road my bike on the Augusta Rail Trail sandwiched between the Kennebec River and a set of abandoned railroad tracks here in Maine.

The blacktop path is part of the East Coast Greenway linking cities from Maine all the way to Florida.

People using it not only take in the natural beauty surrounding the trail…

but they also encounter sites typically seen in the big city.

In the picture below, the manmade structure in the background appears to have been a warehouse where trains from bygone days delivered cargo.

Large rocks out front were definitely placed there by human hands.

And although the structure and its crumbling concrete can be seen from the bike path, its graffiti cannot.

I cycled onward, passing homes and businesses butting up to the trail.

Here’s one of many establishments on a busy street nearby.

Is it just me, or are these signs grouped together all wrong?

The portion of the trail I biked on ends at a grocery store in Gardiner, so I stopped and purchased a frozen snack to savor later in the day.

Other cyclists, joggers, and walkers seemed to have come out of the woodwork as I made my way back to Hallowell. This dog lover was kind enough to let me take a picture of her pooch, Lola.

As I descended down the path into my little town, the Kennebec River came into view.

A grassy area on the shoreline was the perfect place to enjoy my frozen treat.

Yep, biking and ice cream really do complement each other.
