Cayuga Indians and the USS Cayuga

During my dad's last year in the Navy, he served on the USS Cayuga in the Pacific. The Navy usually names its ships after people.
However, I just learned something new when I pulled over at a "text" stop here in New York. As I read the historical marker at this spot, the word "Cayuga" made me pause.

The marker says the Cayuga were one of the five tribes that formed the Five Nations, or the Iroquois Confederacy.
I googled "USS Cayuga" and read that my dad's ship was named after a county in New York, not after a person as I always assumed.
However, that county in New York was named after an Indian tribe, so in reality my dad’s ship was named after people. The Cayuga Indians.
Anyway, that was just a cool thing to discover.
Go out there and learn something new today!
